Backpacking Trip To Spain

When it comes to ticking things off my bucket list, I have my head clear and my mind focussed 😀

Do you think anyone would want to have ‘facing a gruesome accident but managing to get out alive’ in their bucket list? Well, I did tick it off my list 😛

Brushing aside such not-so-sane things, I do have some travel goals and Europe was always on the list and I wanted to do one backpackers trip with strangers before I turn 25. And yeah, it’s done now (atleast, a little part of Europe)

Spain and Portugal exploration happened to be my first leg of Europe journey. To all those people who wanted to know about how I have planned the trip, about the backpackers group and about my experience in these two countries- this blog post, the upcoming one and my Instagram posts would answer all your queries. I will be pitching in my suggestions about the places to visit, the places you could skip and also, the precautions you need to take based on my personal experience.

Let’s get started!! 😀

Mumbai > Barcelona > Ibiza > Madrid > Lisbon > Mumbai

BARCELONA

5 days and 4 nights stay

Accommodation : Generator Hostel

Main Places to Visit:

La Sagrada Familia – Renowned for its captivating Gaudi architecture and magnificence. Book your tickets online and they don’t allow post your time slot (Be on Time). It will be a guided tour provided you make it on time. By the way, it is still being built!! (since a century almost :/ )

Gothic Quarter – Old city of Barcelona. Explore the place on foot. Has a plethora of options for restaurants and clubs. Night life is good here.

La Rambla – You can’t miss this street. It is one of the best to witness the vibe of Barcelona city.

La Barceloneta – Seaside neighbourhood of Barcelona lined up with good restaurants along with a splendid view

Things to Do:

Cycling tour in the city ( they are going to show you some of the best streets in Barca)

Try Sangria and Aperol Spritz if you are into wine and alcohol

Try PaellaTapas, Churros, Croissants  when in Spain (Food)

Camp Nou (didn’t visit as I am not so much into football) and Opium (popular pub) are two things which have good feedback but I couldn’t make it. Try those if you find time.

IBIZA

2 days and 2 nights

Accommodation : Amistat Island Hostel

Main Places to Visit:

Sant Antoni de Portmany – Town on the west coast of Ibiza (party place). Explore port area for night life.

Dalt Vila – It’s the old town of Ibiza which should be explored on foot. Such amazing fairy tale streets!!

Castell de Eivissa – You might want to visit this place to get a good panoramic view of Ibiza.

Things to Do:

Boat Party – You should not miss on this. A unique experience all together. Costs around 6-8k per person.

Watch the sun go down with wonderful live instrumental music and some wine at/ near Café Mambo in Sant Antoni de Portmany. Have to say, my best sunset so far.

Amnesia is apparently an amazing pub you can visit in Ibiza. We chose to party by the sea-side with some good wine and good company !! (my way of partying 😛 )

MADRID

3 days and 2 nights

Accommodation : Sun Gate One (best hostel in the entire trip)

Main Places to Visit:

Royal Palace of Madrid – One of the most popular places in Madrid. We didn’t enter inside though!! We were enjoying the view with some good live music 😀

Gran Via – This street is always buzzing and is the best for shopping 🙂

Toledo – It’s on countryside, a 45 min ride from Madrid. You can find many local travel agencies conducting a day trip to Toledo. Historically significant place!! Again, explore this beauty on foot.

Also, Stadio Santiago Bernabeu  if you are interested in football 🙂

I didn’t find Madrid interesting though!! It mostly had the busy city vibe with good partying and shopping places. Teatro Kapitol is a must visit pub if you are into partying.

Alert : Pickpocketing is damn prominent in Spain. Be very very careful with your belongings!! You never even notice it, they are too good at it.

Backpackers Group

‘When in City’ is one such travel agency which frequently does backpackers’ trips across the world every year. Well, there are enough pros and cons when dealing with this group. So, weigh those if you are planning to join their trips :/

Pros being that you might end up meeting really cool people like I did. It could be a coincidence too. Of course, more than anything else, people you are with, is important.

Cons being that you are going to overpay for their not-so-good service and their not-so-experienced team. You end up paying a premium compared to other such groups. They have limited knowledge about the best places to explore (atleast in case of Spain and Portugal)- had received misleading guidance at times, and you will also see them become stingy :/ (mostly in case of accommodation)  –  which was so disappointing for many of us. Their packages include only accommodation at hostels, internal flights and a trip guide ( International flights , visa charges not included). Many things in their itinerary require additional payment. So, take note of all those.

So, before you go ahead, decide if you are okay with the cons and then take a call.

Well!! These are some suggestions based on my travel experience. DM me on Instagram for more details. Would always love to help you guys 🙂

Hope this post is helpful for those planning to any of these places!!

Print On Print

Prints and patterns have a lot of history, few of them having some political significance too. It started in 50’s and over time, experimentation continued till 90’s. Post 2000’s , it is mostly a revival of previous patterns with a touch of creativity.

Did you know that the polka dots pattern came into existence when a group of dancers wore polka dot blouses to protest Wall Street supporting Vietnam war!! Fashion does have some history attached to it in addition to the creative perspective.

Fashion runways have been flooded with Print on Print trend this season and I am sold for this trend due to the risk involved in creating a flawless look while keeping in mind the color palettes, print patterns, accessories and lot more.

Let’s not dig into the old trend of matching prints with solid plain opposites to which most of us are inclined to. Let’s just dive into mastering the art of matching prints which is quite a challenge for many of us unless we know how to decipher the logic behind that.

Since many of you also requested for a blog on this trend in my Instagram , let’s get started.

( In case you are still trying to figure out, mixing prints basically means matching a printed top with a printed bottom)

Firstly, the Do’s and Don’ts:

  • If you are mixing two different patterns, then it’s better to stick to similar color palette. It’s better not to go for contrasts in this case.
  • If you are mixing similar prints, you can play around with the color palette. Keep in mind, that the color of the pattern could be contrasted but the base color needs to same. ( Say, a white top with red polka dots can be matched with white trousers having vertical stripes in black)
  • Pattern colors could be matched based on contrast but NEVER the base colors.

I have experimented with mixing similar patterns – stripes. I stuck to monochrome and added some dainty jewellery to elevate the look.

I have also added some additional references for other types of mixing patterns. Hope it helps 🙂

Also, do let me know if it really helped 😀

1. Stripes All Over Look

Mixing stripes while keeping the base color constant.

3

2. Checks All Over

Matching checks keeping the base color constant is the only rule for this look.Screen Shot 2018-04-14 at 12.06.04 PM.png

3. Polka Dots

You may try mixing polka dots of varied sizes to make it look appealing. Again, first rule first, either same base color or flip the base color of top with pattern color of bottom.Screen Shot 2018-04-14 at 12.06.24 PM

4. Logo/Slogan Shirts and Patterned Bottoms

Pair a logo or slogan t-shirt with any kind of patterned bottom. Here, you can contrast the base colors, that’s actually the key to ace this look in a new way.Screen Shot 2018-04-14 at 12.06.44 PM

There are many other patterns which you can try, say, rainbow, animal, tropical prints and so on. Just stick to the main rules, you are good to go 🙂

‘P’ For Plaid

‘Plaid’ is one word which has been doing rounds all along the recent fashion weeks in London, Milan, Paris and New York. For those of you who find it hard to interpret this term, it’s basically patterns of colored checks and intersecting lines. Considering that 90’s fashion is back in loop now, pant suits , bell bottoms, plaid and sequin are current season favorites.

I have completely fallen for the pant suits (trouser + blazer) trend. It’s so elegant and just on-point. It’s been quite some time since I posted something about fashion. So, here I go , introducing the latest trend of plaid, pant suits and various ways to style a blazer.

Most of the power dressing looks that are created using paint suits require minimal accessories. The look should be kept as minimalistic as possible with fine jewelry, pointed heels, and a mini handbag.

I have created looks where I have used a plaid blazer with cropped jeans, plaid trouser, and a basic black tee. I chose tan colored pointed heels and a black mini handbag to complete the look.

Power dressing styling tips:

  • Go with sleek hairstyles for official purposes, else go wild with a wavy hairstyle
  • Subtle nudes play along with power dressing so well. However, if you want to use the same outfit for an informal event, go for darker shades of lipstick and smokey eyes
  • Go for fine jewelry
  • Definitely a thumbs up for pumps or ankle-strapped heels as footwear
  • A big NO to huge totes for this look

I have created looks both for formal and informal events for this post. Without any further delay, let’s dig into the looks 😀

Look 1:

Blazer + Jeans +  Basic Tee : Instead of wearing the blazer in its complete shape, just throw it over your shoulder to give a casual look.

7259

Look 2:

Blazer + Jeans : Wear a blazer as top if you know you can handle the plunging neckline.

101112

Look 3:

Pant suit – Blazer + Trouser : Match the color palette on blazer and trousers. You may choose a plaid blazer and go for a plain trouser in dark color palette of the blazer.

171914

Look 4 :

Blazer + Basic Tee + Trouser : Match the blazer and trouser color palette and patterns.

Hope you enjoyed reading it as much I loved creating it 🙂

Hope it also helped you get an idea about styling blazers 😀

10 Tips To Pack Outfits For A Beach Vacation

Are you someone who hates tagging along heavy baggage to your vacation? Do you love to know how to optimise your packing list so that you don’t have to carry a lot of clothes but just pick few basics and style them differently to create new looks!!

Bingo!! I heard you 😀

December is here!! I guess most of you would be planning for a vacation and majorly, it is a perfect time for a beach vacation!!

So, here I go with all the styling tips which I am going to splurge at you for your beach vacation 😀

For me, an outfit includes clothing and accesories. These tips include all about those 🙂

1. Whites Will Be Your Saviour

White has that cool vibe which syncs in well with the beaches and adds a touch of boho  vibe as well.

114Whites !! Whites 😀

2. Choose A Pair Of Comfortable Shorts

Pick a pair of light-colored shorts-say, white or light-colored denim which could go with most of your tops

153My go-to pair of shorts

3. Carry One Bohemian Shrug In Neutral Color

Preferably, a white shrug. It would be great to flaunt in a beach 🙂

109All white lace shrug

4. Carry A Couple Of Floral/Embriodery Skirts

Since, our basic whites don’t add that pop of color, try to choose a couple of skirts which bring in that colorful essence to your outfit.

186172Floral/Embriodered Skirts- you can go for flowly skirts as well 🙂

5. Pick Good Shades / A Straw Hat

How can you miss these and that too for a beach vacation unless you want to get tanned!! Also, these accessories give a complete different look to your outfit.

112Straw Hat

6. Carry A Mix of Neutral and Colorful Tops

Since we stuck to neutral colored shorts and shrugs, pick a few tops which are colorful and if you choose to carry a colorful shrug, pick light colored tops. Choose these tops such that they go with the skirts as well. Pack Less!!

183116A mix of light and bright colored tops

7. Don’t Forget Flip-Flops or Any Comfortable Pair Of Flats

I choose a pair of white mules which go with almost most of my outfits. You can choose even gladiators or boho sandals. Comfort should be your priority 🙂

8. Bohemian Backpack/ Sling

I prefer a backpack or a bucket sling as I can dump in a lot of stuff. Try sticking to tan colored bags as they can go with most of the outfits 🙂

174Bohemian backpack

9. Convertible Dress

This is one boon if you could find a dress which can be converted into a shrug or a maxi which you style as skirt. You can easily create a minimum of 2-3 looks with such a dress.

158Used a buttoned dress as a shrug

10. Bunch Of Bracelets and Rings

These are absolutely going to accentuate the look. Go clumsy with bracelets and rings and stay subtle with chains or go for a heavy boho neckpiece and ditch other accesories.

Never go heavy with all accessories. Highlight one and relax the others 🙂

You can clearly see that I have used the same pair of shorts for completely different looks and same is the case with tops.I choose tops and bottoms in such a way that they can be interchanged.

Hope these tips are helpful for you guys 😀

Tunes Of Bohemian

Every aspect in fashion creates its own vibe and each detail has its own significance. Bohemian is one such trend which demands more attention to details. It’s more about playing with a mix of colors and accessories.

Before I could jump into how to ace bohemian styles in my next articles, I thought that I need to release a bohemian lookbook just to give a brief idea for the bohemian amateurs.

As you know, I like keeping my lookbooks precise 🙂  (Thank God!! Not much to read 😛 )

About Look

For Bohemian looks, try to choose outfits which are easy-breezy and it’s your choice to decide on the amount of detail you need on the attire. The more the details on the outfit, the less you accessorize.

I choose an extremely comfortable printed jumpsuit and focused more on accessories. Also, metal mixing in accessories is something which I gave a shot in this look (Do let me know your comments about it 🙂 ). A statement neck-piece, a pair of mules and mix of metal bangles – these complete the look !!

Here we go 🙂

10 Things To Do In And Around Jaipur

Camels decked up in beautiful colors, streets beaming with homes resembling the palace architecture, women clad in colorful sarees with a ghungat (a veil worn to cover the face), men flaunting their multi-color turbans and of course, the scorching heat – If you have experienced all of these, you are definitely in Rajasthan.

We didn’t have enough time to explore Rajasthan completely. So, we thought we would be doing two different trips. One is the short one- includes Jaipur, Ajmer, Pushkar and the other includes Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaiselmer. The first one is done in this trip and I would be planning my second one sometime next year.

Since many of you requested for this trip details on my Instagram, here I go with all the details and the things to do 😀

Accommodation

I was exploring Booking.com and found this cute little homestay, Magpie Villa which was right in the center of  Jaipur .We stayed in Jaipur for 3 days. There are also good number of luxurious options available in Jaipur.

Budget options : Magpie Villa , Umaid Bhawan

Luxurious : Rambagh Palace

10 Things To Do In And Around Jaipur

1. Visit Amer Palace and City Palace, Jaipur

City palace is the current residence of the royal family which is in Jaipur whereas Amer Palace is the age-old residence of the royal family when Amer used to be the capital of the state.

These two palaces are a must-visit to see the architecture and mind blowing facilities that the royal family had, back in 16th century.

2. Don’t forget the elephant ride in Amer fort, Jaipur

There are two ways get to the top of the Amer fort – elephant ride and vehicles. Elephant safari is something which you need to try here.

IMG_0828Amer fort

3. Visit Nahargarh Fort, Jaipur

This fort which is situated on the top of a hill will give you an entire view of the city. This fort has a completely different architecture compared to the other forts in Jaipur. While most of the forts have intricate stone carvings, this portrays detailed paintings as well.

IMG_1029Nahargarh fort

4. Shopping in the streets near Hawa Mahal, Jaipur

Silver and Gem Jewellery is something which I loved about this market.

IMG_0784Hawa Mahal (It’s just a wall – No palace, as the name says it)

5. Taste Pyaas Kachori and Raj Kachori in Jaipur

These are really popular in Jaipur. You can snap a quick break in LMB near Hawa Mahal to taste these. If you are person with sweet tooth, then you would be enjoying the food even more 🙂

kachoriRaj Kachori

6. Camel Ride and Rajasthani women dressing in Pushkar

Pushkar is my favorite part of the trip. You can actually witness a bit of the actual desert atmosphere in Pushkar. Since we went just before the Pushkar Camel Mela was about to start, we could see the preparations in full swing.

Also, you can try dressing up like a local for which they usually charge 100-200 bucks per person. Camel riders usually takes you to this place if you ask him 🙂

IMG_0577Pushkar ( That’s me 😀 )

7. Visit the Brahma temple and Pushkar Lake in Pushkar

This is the only temple which is built for Brahma in the world. More than the temple, I liked the Pushkar lake which is just close to the temple.

8. Shopping in Pushkar Streets

This is one more thing which I loved the most in Pushkar. Home decor and camel leather bags are the best here. I stocked up quite a lot of stuff here. Personally, I found Pushkar shopping much better and cheaper than Jaipur.

unnamed (4)Local Women In Pushkar Market

unnamed (5)Crockery in Pushkar Market

9. Take the rope-way to reach the Savitri Temple, Pushkar

More than the temple, rope-way gives a view of entire Pushkar.

10. Visit the Ajmer Darga

Ajmer was on my list mostly because of the Darga, which is extremely popular. Be prepared to witness some insane crowd 😛

PS : This Darga didn’t really appeal to me as I found it as a place where you find few locals looting money from the devotees in the name of the god (especially if you are an outsider).I personally experienced it.This is not only the case in this Darga but also, many of the temples that I have visited in recent times.

Other than that, Darga was good 🙂 If you are a foodie, then the streets outside Darga need to be explored 😀

unnamed (2)Entrance to the Darga

Tips

  • Carry a scarf / hat to protect yourself from the sun. Otherwise, you are going to see  50 shades of tan 😛
  • Bargain a lot if you are shopping in Jaipur. Since many foreigners visit these stores, they hike up the prices (Ask for 40% of the price)
  • For camel ride in Pushkar, you can find one place where all the camels are present just near Savitri temple. However, those are a bit expensive. Bargain or you can find a cheaper option if could spot any camel on the road which is not in any group
  • Shorts are not allowed in most of these temples and Dargas. So, dress accordingly
  • Opt for tourist guides only for City palace and Amer fort. Other places don’t require one

That’s it for this blog, DM me on Instagram or email me on lavanyapulijala7@gmail.com for anymore details.

Previous post : Pamper the Colors

Pamper the Colors

It’s time to pamper those lovely Indian traditional colors 🙂

However, should it always be the heavy lehengas , gowns or sarees to look festive?? Absolutely not!! For all those who prefer comfort over the struggle to handle sarees or lehengas, I plan to show how you can be comfortable and festive at the same time 😀

Since many of you asked me about styling festive outfits on Instagram, here are few of my general styling tips for festive outfits :

  • Have one piece of your outfit (say, Dupatta or Blouse or Skirt)  which grabs the attention – colorful fabric / overall embroidery / bright addons like tassels/pompoms. In this case, the rest of the outfit should be kept simple. This is something which I tried in this blog post
  • Use statement jewelry ( adds life to any outfit)
  • Own a pair of silver and colorful kolhapuris/ juttis ( Ethnic footwear saviors- These two would be enough for almost every kind of ethnic outfit)

I styled my ethnic wear using a normal crop top and dhoti pant. I picked a embroidered dupatta to add color to the outfit. Statement earrings and colorful juttis are a perfect match.

I have styled the dupatta in three different ways to give different looks, here you go 🙂

Previous post : Saree With A Twist

Saree With A Twist

With festive season around the corner, there have been quite a few requests on my Instagram about some ideas on festive outfits. Well, I have two main versions of festive looks in my mind currently. One, which involves bold experimentation of the blend of fashion and tradition and the other being, the usual effortless ethnic styles which everyone could happily carry 🙂

Let me go with the first i.e experimenting with fashion in this blog post and the second one would be lined up for the next week. Stay Tuned 😀

Six yards of Indian saree allows one to create insane variety of looks, due to the flexibility and the length of the fabric. One of my previous posts showed how to style a saree with denim and this one would be another turn-around. This saree is older than me 😛 , probably 26 years, I obviously picked it from my mom’s wardrobe.

I remember I saw my granny wearing saree in a dhoti style (with the usual pallu style).I still find people in some of the remote villages wearing it in that manner. My granny is definitely a trend setter 🙂 Taking cue from her style, I styled this saree as a dhoti with a front pallu and accessorized with a wide belt to give a different look to the saree. You could also use corset belts instead of the normal ones, I didn’t have one so I wore the normal one.

As you know, silver jewellery is my best companion to slay any look- so, I used my weapon here. I used a crop top as blouse for this look 🙂

I wanted to give a crude look to my hair, so left it untouched in my usual messy and wavy texture.

If you love experimenting in a subtle way but not the bold way, here are some styling tips for the festive season 🙂

  • Use an off-shoulder top / crop-top as a blouse
  • Change your hairstyle- may be, go for a half bun
  • Include statement sleeves in your usual blouse patterns
  • Wear a long ethnic overcoat on your saree, may be something like this

Stay connected through Instagram to find out more such tips 🙂

Here goes the look 🙂

Previous post : Attention!! It’s Ruffles Time

Attention!! It’s Ruffles Time

If you are one of those who want to make a fashion statement by not overdoing things, by just keeping it simple, then the current ruffles trend is your savior.

Even though it is the current trend, its origin in fashion industry dates back to the 15th century when ruffles around the neckline became a prominent fashion choice among most of the elite women.Fabric is manipulated in a wavy pattern to form ruffles. As many say, it’s the same old fashion that has come back into picture now.

If you are wondering how to style those ruffle patterned clothes, then I am here to help you out with some styling tips 🙂

Ruffles come in varying sizes. It’s better to stick to particular size range of ruffle based on your body type.

  • A top with huge wavy ruffles around the neck looks perfect for women with broad shoulders and less bust. Ruffles divert the attention towards them, so it’s better that women with slightly heavier upper body go for tiny ruffles gathered in a pretty way to improvise their neckline

  • A ruffled skirt might have ruffles placed at different positions.Based on the position of ruffles and the shape of your body at that position, you need to choose the skirt.Ruffles divert attention to them due to their wavy structure. If the ruffles are placed in a position where that particular part of your body is slightly heavy, it highlights that part of your body and makes it look even more bulky. So, make your choice accordingly

I have created one look with a ruffled midi skirt and paired it with a cutout crop top. Accessorized  with a statement ear cuff and basic heels.

Hope you like the look as much as I love creating it 🙂
